ADVENTURES IN PARADISE FIJI, Coral Coast
authentic Fijian cultural tours
1 day

Adventures in Paradise Cave Tour: A wealth of information and a splash of humor make this tour a whole lot of fun. The Naihehe Cave has an easy access, a comfortable environment and fascinating history. It was a fortress to one of the last cannibal tribes - and you'll see some awesome reminders - including a ritual platform and cannibal oven. It's a natural wonder too, with extraordinary displays of natural rock formations. They give you a very "non-touristy" aspect of this very special place. You'll also visit a Fijian village, meet the tribal descendents, participate in authentic "kava" ceremonies and take a leisurely downstream cruise on a "bilibili". You'll be in great company with their guides - renowned for fun and good information. This Adventures in Paradise full day trip will be the highlight of your holiday - so be prepared: wear sandals or shoes you won't mind getting wet, a swimsuit and hat and avoid carrying too much. You won't need your wallet but don't forget your camera! They will give you a great lunch and door to door service from Nadi and Coral coast hotels. Ideal for all ages of reasonable fitness. Adventures in Paradise operate the cave tour on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and the Waterfall tour on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

CAVE TOUR ITINERARY

Sigatoka Valley:  The one hour route you follow to Naihehe Cave, follows the Sigatoka River 42 km. Inland through Fiji's famous "Salad Bowl" and some of the best sights in the country - river valleys and highlands, lush forests and village scenes - past ancient tribal forts, Chiefly burial sites, villages and Hindi temples.

History and legends - their guides will entertain with their fun and knowledge especially regarding traditional folklore and religion - with tales of the first Tongans in Fiji - their migration, ancient practices, tribal warfare and final rebellion against Christianity and the Colonial government.   You visit their descendents in "Toga Village" - named in memory of their Tongan ancestors who reigned supreme in the valley sheltered in the Naihehe Caves and were the last cannibal tribes of Fiji.

Authentic Ceremonies - you will participate in ceremonies which are translated - it's a great way to learn Fijian culture and protocols in a village which is relatively unexposed to tourism - no shows here - it's the real thing!

Visit an ancient cave fortress - to the last rebel cannibal  tribes in Fiji.  A pagan priest ruled Naihehe Cave - this is where he performed rituals and communicated with the gods.  Its still considered sacred today and the priest chamber, ritual platform and cannibal oven are just some of the remaining evidence. You'll also see the sleeping chambers, children's area, warrior' post and escape routes.  The last descendent "Priest" accompanies you inside the cave were he pays awesome tribute to his ancestors.

Explore a natural wonder - an official geology report names Naihehe as one of the most significant caves in Fiji.. For its immense size and extraordinary natural features.  The cathedral chamber reveals an astounding spectacle - huge archways and secret sparkling chambers.  Massive stalagmites rising up from the floor, stalacites hanging from ledges like strange creatures of the past and sparkling flowstones seem like silent frozen waterfalls.  A mysterious underground spring has created a freshwater pond and stream while out of the darkness above, comes the steady drip..drip..drip.. Which echoes throughout the cave.   It's a pleasantly cool, strange and awesome environment with a history to match.

Lunch and Refreshments - you are served delicious individual picnic baskets prepared by Adventures in Paradise.  You are also provided with wine, beer, soft drinks and bottled mineral water throughout the day.

Bamboo Bilibili rafting - a leisurely downstream cruise back to the village on traditional bamboo rafts.  Thrilling but not chilling!  Shallow, warm waters make this river ride perfectly safe and great for a dip.  It's a nice opportunity to see some river lifestyle and splash around with local children while their mothers wash their clothes on the riverbank.

Village entertainment - a unique chance to stroll about the village, mingle with the locals and delight in warm country hospitality and "island" entertainment

WATERFALL ITINERARY

- a brilliant blend of culture, nature and good fun.

You'll visit the home of a village Chief and take part in authentic ceremonies, hear tales of local folklore, superstition and ancient practices of voodoo and cannibalism on this award winning day trip.

You'll discover traditional plant medicines on a rustic rainforest trail:  enjoy exotic tropical fruits and swim with the "gods" in the legendary waterfall lagoon.  You'll learn how to husk a coconut or just relax and enjoy the therapeutic waters and mystical tranquility of this magnificent natural setting.

They will give you a late but great lunch with free wine, beer, soft drinks and bottled water throughout the day.  Door to door service from Nadi and Coral Coast hotels; fabulous guides renowned for fun, care and great information.

Wear comfortable walking sandals that you don't mind getting wet, a hat, swimsuit under light casual clothing, take a towel and don't be deterred if it rains; just bring along a dry set of clothes and a spirit of adventure. Ideal for all ages of reasonable fitness.

Itinerary:

From the moment you are picked up, there isn't a moment wasted - and it's all at a leisurely and relaxing pace. Of course, the waterfall is wonderful, but what makes this tour so very special is the authentic cultural aspect and guides who delight with their entertainment, fun and knowledge - traditional plant medicines, tribal hierarchy, ancient practices and mystical folklore.  This is a rare chance to experience a combination of today's village lifestyle and ancient traditional customs.. And there are no shows!

Village protocol and ceremonies - "Tama", "Sevusevu" and "kava" in the home of the village chief.  They explain the ceremonies and tell some of the fascinating history about this tribal village, including tales of superstition, witchcraft and cannibalism!  A brief stroll through the village gives glimpses of typical homes and lifestyles.

Leisurely rainforest trek - after the village, a rustic trail takes you wandering for about 40 minutes through native bush land and lush tropical rainforest - splashing through shallow streams while along the way, their guides explain the traditional usage of plants including herbal medicines which have been used for centuries - from berries, to inner bark and roots.  Some plants were used in voodoo concoctions and others to counteract them!.

Waterfall swimming - "Savu na Mate Laya" waterfall is steeped in mysterious legends.  It's believed to be the favorite swimming place of the famous spirit gods, "The Twins" and cascades about 120 ft. Into an inviting swimming lagoon. Take a refreshing dip in the therapeutic waters, or just delight in  the tranquility of a wondrous setting of ancient trees and lush tropical surroundings. You'll understand how legends were born here.

Tropical fruits - they serve delicious tropical fruits from a hand woven basket on a banana leaf platter.

Coconut husking demonstration - they teach you how to husk a coconut and explain the importance of the coconut tree.  You can sample the juice and flesh and feed the friendly waterfall fish which suddenly appear at this time.

Lunch and refreshments - sizzling home made sausages, tender steak and marinated chicken with a delicious salad spread - they'll cater for vegetarians too.  Wine and beer is served with lunch and soft drinks and bottled mineral water is provided throughout the day.  Lunch is prepared by Adventures in Paradise and drinks are available throughout the day.
A great rainy day excursion - while most tours are subject to good weather, this one is great in wet weather too.  There's nothing quite like warm rain in a rainforest and it smells wonderful too.  They don't have paved walkways so their guests get to feel the warm mud squishing between their toes, only to be rinsed off at the next creek crossing. Using Fijian umbrellas - giant "Via" leaves and seeing prawns jumping in the streams is such a wonderful experience - one almost wishes for rain.
