Volcanic in origin, rugged Vanua Levu (Big Land) is Fiji's second largest island. With its mountainous interior, coconut plantations and lush rainforest, it is often described as the "real Fiji" and villages here are more traditional. The island's many bays are ideal for kayaking, while the offshore fringing reefs offer some of the country's best snorkeling and diving. The hub of activity on Vanua Levu is the southern town of Savusavu overlooking beautiful Savusavu Bay. The big, calm bay is teeming with fish and fringed by mountains and old copra plantations. The town offers a wide range of activities and adventures including scuba diving, sailing trips, sport fishing, cultural tours, snorkeling and kayaking. Things to see are Savusavu Pearl farm, Savusavu hot springs, the Planter's Club, Savusavu Blowholes, Waisali Nature reserve, Namenalal Island. Things to do include diving, fishing, sa kayaking, yachting, village visits, mountain biking and birdwatching. Places throughout Vanua levu and Namenalala are the nesting and feeding areas for birds such as red-footed boobies, Polynesian starlings and banded rails.
